Anti-VEGF injections are a treatment that has changed the outlook for two of the leading causes of vision loss: wet age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. By targeting the root cause of abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage in the retina, these injections can preserve, and sometimes improve, vision that would otherwise be lost. What Anti-VEGF Injections Treat
VEGF stands for vascular endothelial growth factor, which is a protein your body produces to signal the growth of new blood vessels.
In a healthy eye, VEGF plays a normal role. But in certain retinal diseases, the eye produces too much of it, triggering the growth of abnormal, fragile blood vessels that leak fluid and blood into the retina. Anti-VEGF drugs block that signal, calming the abnormal vessels and reducing leakage.
This same underlying problem shows up in more than one disease, which is why anti-VEGF injections are used across two major indications:
Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration (Wet AMD)
In wet AMD, abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak, causing rapid central vision loss. Anti-VEGF injections are the first-line treatment for wet AMD. When started early and given consistently, they can stop the leakage, preserve central vision, and in many patients improve it.
Diabetic Retinopathy and Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)
In diabetic eye disease, damaged retinal vessels leak fluid into the macula (diabetic macular edema), blurring central vision, and in advanced stages the retina grows abnormal new vessels.
Anti-VEGF injections reduce this swelling and leakage and can help slow the progression of diabetic retinopathy. They are frequently a first-line treatment for DME and are often used alongside laser treatment.
How Laser Photocoagulation Works
Laser photocoagulation uses precisely focused laser energy to seal or shrink problem blood vessels in the retina. There are two main types, chosen based on the type and location of the disease:
Focal / Grid Laser
The laser is aimed directly at specific leaking blood vessels near the macula, sealing them to reduce fluid leakage and macular swelling. This helps stabilize central vision and, in some cases, can help recover some vision that was lost to swelling.
Panretinal (Scatter) Photocoagulation
For advanced disease, the laser is applied in a scattered pattern across the peripheral retina, often with hundreds of small laser spots, sometimes over more than one session. By treating the oxygen-starved peripheral retina, this approach reduces the stimulus driving abnormal blood vessel growth, causing those dangerous vessels to regress. It has been shown to substantially reduce the risk of severe vision loss.
Laser treatment is primarily used to stabilize vision and prevent future loss, not to reverse damage that has already occurred. In timely cases of macular edema, some vision may improve, but the main goal is protection.
