What Is Diabetic Laser Treatment?
Diabetic laser treatment, clinically known as laser photocoagulation, is an in-office procedure that uses precisely focused laser energy to treat the retinal damage caused by diabetes. It works by sealing off leaking blood vessels and calming the abnormal vessel growth that threatens your vision.
It's a well-established, decades-proven approach, used either on its own or alongside anti-VEGF injections, and its primary purpose is to protect your vision by stopping diabetic eye disease from progressing.
Depending on your specific condition, Dr. Trinidad may use one of two laser approaches: a targeted "focal" treatment for swelling in the central retina, or a broader "scatter" treatment for more advanced disease.
How Laser Photocoagulation Works
Laser photocoagulation uses precisely focused laser energy to seal or shrink problem blood vessels in the retina. There are two main types, chosen based on the type and location of the disease:
Focal / Grid Laser
The laser is aimed directly at specific leaking blood vessels near the macula, sealing them to reduce fluid leakage and macular swelling. This helps stabilize central vision and, in some cases, can help recover some vision that was lost to swelling.
Panretinal (Scatter) Photocoagulation
For advanced disease, the laser is applied in a scattered pattern across the peripheral retina, often with hundreds of small laser spots, sometimes over more than one session. By treating the oxygen-starved peripheral retina, this approach reduces the stimulus driving abnormal blood vessel growth, causing those dangerous vessels to regress. It has been shown to substantially reduce the risk of severe vision loss.
Laser treatment is primarily used to stabilize vision and prevent future loss, not to reverse damage that has already occurred. In timely cases of macular edema, some vision may improve, but the main goal is protection.
