What is the Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is a premium intraocular lens used during cataract surgery, and the only one that can be fine-tuned after your procedure.

Traditional lenses are fixed the moment they're implanted, which means your vision is set on the day of surgery. The LAL’s prescription can be adjusted using targeted UV light treatments once your eyes have healed.

Unlike any lens before it, the LAL lets you experience your vision in everyday life first, refine it to your liking, and then lock it in once it feels right.

How the Light Adjustable Lens Works

The Light Adjustable Lens is made from a special photosensitive material that responds to ultraviolet (UV) light. This is what makes it different from every other lens used in cataract surgery.

The process works in three stages:

1. Implantation
During cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens is removed, and the Light Adjustable Lens is placed in the eye, just like a standard lens implant.

2. Adjustment
Once your eye has healed, typically a few weeks after surgery, you return for a series of quick, painless light treatments. Each treatment uses the Light Delivery Device to apply precise UV light that gently reshapes the lens, fine-tuning your vision for distance, near, or blended vision. Between visits, you get to live with your vision and report how it feels in real-world settings, so each adjustment reflects how you actually see.

3. Lock-in
When your vision reaches the outcome you want, a final light treatment "locks in" the lens so it no longer changes. Most patients complete their adjustments and lock-in over a few weeks.

Because the lens responds to UV light, you'll wear special UV-protective glasses during all waking hours between surgery and your final lock-in treatment. This prevents everyday sunlight from making unintended changes to the lens. Once your vision is locked in, the glasses are no longer needed.

Who Should Consider the Light Adjustable Lens in San Antonio, TX?

The Light Adjustable Lens may be a strong option if you want more control over your final vision after cataract surgery.

This option is often recommended for patients who:

  • Want the ability to refine their vision after surgery
  • Have had prior LASIK or other procedures
  • Have astigmatism or more complex vision needs
  • Want a more customized visual outcome

You may also have the option to choose blended vision, where one eye is optimized for distance and the other for near tasks, helping reduce your reliance on glasses.

The LAL does ask more of you than a standard lens, because it requires several follow-up visits and consistent use of UV-protective glasses until lock-in. Patients who are comfortable with that short-term commitment tend to be the happiest with their results.

During your consultation at Trinidad Vision Center, Dr. Trinidad and our team will evaluate your eye health and determine whether this FDA-approved technology is the right fit for your vision goals.

Light Adjustable Lens vs. Standard and Premium Lenses

All lens types treat your cataract. The difference is how, and when, your final vision is set.

Standard Monofocal Lens Premium Multifocal / EDOF Lens Light Adjustable Lens
Vision set when? Day of surgery Day of surgery After healing, based on real-world vision
Adjustable afterward? No No Yes
Astigmatism Limited; may need add-on Built-in options Fine-tuned with light treatments
After prior LASIK/RK Less predictable Variable Well suited
Glasses reduction Usually distance only Distance + near Customizable
UV-protective glasses needed temporarily? No No Yes, until lock-in
Typical insurance coverage Often covered Premium (out-of-pocket) Premium (out-of-pocket)

The standout advantage of the LAL is timing. Instead of committing to a prescription on the day of surgery, you experience your vision first and then dial it in.

Customize Your Vision After Surgery

This level of customization after surgery is not available with standard lens options. Unlike standard lenses, your vision is not locked in on the day of surgery. Adjustments are made after your eyes heal, allowing your results to be refined based on how you actually see in daily life.

Is the Light Adjustable Lens Right for You?

The Light Adjustable Lens may be a great fit if you:

  • Want a say in your final vision instead of committing on surgery day
  • Have astigmatism, or have had LASIK, PRK, or RK in the past
  • Are motivated to attend a few follow-up visits and wear UV-protective glasses until lock-in
  • Value a customized outcome and view premium technology as a worthwhile investment

A standard or premium fixed lens may make more sense if you'd prefer the simplest path with no follow-up adjustments, or if travel and scheduling would make several closely spaced visits difficult.

There's no single "best" lens, only the best lens for your eyes, your lifestyle, and your goals. The clearest way to know is a consultation, where Dr. Trinidad can measure your eyes and walk you through your options.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Light Adjustable Lens different?

Arrow Down icon

It is the only lens that can be adjusted after cataract surgery. Instead of setting your vision on the day of surgery, adjustments are made afterward based on how you actually see.

Am I a candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens?

Arrow Down icon

Many patients with cataracts are candidates, especially those who want more control over their outcome or have had prior LASIK or complex prescriptions.

How many light treatments will I need?

Arrow Down icon

Most patients complete a series of adjustment visits followed by a final lock-in treatment, usually over a few weeks. Dr. Trinidad will confirm your exact plan based on how your eyes respond.

Do I really have to wear the UV-protective glasses?

Arrow Down icon

Yes, consistently, during all waking hours, until your final lock-in treatment. The lens reacts to UV light, so the glasses protect your results from unintended changes caused by sunlight. After lock-in, you no longer need them.

Why is the Light Adjustable Lens a good option after LASIK?

Arrow Down icon

Patients with prior LASIK often have less predictable outcomes with standard lenses. The ability to adjust vision afterward allows for more precise results.

Will I need to wear glasses after treatment?

Arrow Down icon

Many patients reduce their dependence on glasses, especially for distance. Some may still use reading glasses depending on how their vision is customized.

Will cataract surgery hurt?

Arrow Down icon

Most patients report little to no discomfort during cataract surgery. The procedure is typically quick, and numbing drops are used to help keep you comfortable throughout the process.

How long is recovery?

Arrow Down icon

Many patients notice improved vision within a few days after surgery, although healing continues over the following weeks. Dr. Trinidad and our team will monitor your recovery and guide you through each stage of the healing process.
